From Alex Wade's Times Online blog.

A post well worth reading - a romantic, idealistic bit of our surfing history. I've driven by the entrance a few times and wondered, what's down there now…?

Roxy Jam on TV

Girls surfing on TV! SG Editor Louise Searle went along to the Roxy Jam and this should be a good programme. Watch out for our writeup in the next issue of SurfGirl, out at the start of August.

Boomerang+, a leading independent TV production group, teamed up with Roxy Jam and Channel 4 to film the annual Women’s World Longboard Championship at The Biarritz Roxy Jam Festival in Côtes de Basque, France from 11 to 16 July.

Boomerang+ is producing a 1 x 30min programme for Channel 4 as part of the Freesports on 4; a flagship freesports programme. The Company was in charge of daily coverage of the competition, with satellite news feeds to Roxy Jam website, and daily pod casts of interviews with the surfers. The programme is presented by Ed Leigh, Freesports on 4 presenter and professional surfer, Cassia Meador. The show will be aired on Channel 4 on Sunday 3 August at 8:30am (repeated on C4+1 at 9:30am). The programme has been produced by Dylan Davies.

The Biarritz Roxy Jam Festival combines surfing, art, and music and celebrates the best of women’s surfing from across the world. The Women’s World Longboard Championship saw the world’s top 48 female longboarders competing for the crown. Joy Monahan was crowned this year’s champion and won the $30,000 prize money.

Magma wax

Most people stick with Sex or Palmers, because it works. I wanna try this stuff out - it's got a good rep and they're really thinking about what they're doing. Anyone seen any?

Magma Wax Made with organic soy

Here are some of the things we are doing and the reason we are doing them:

Our first big decision was choosing to pour our wax into RPET (recycled and recyclable containers) containers instead of hand wrapping in paper. There are several important reasons for this. One reason is that pouring into a container removes the need for refrigeration thus reducing our energy and floor space consumption and thereby reducing our carbon footprint.

We chose the use of recycled material instead of other options such as biopolymers (organic plastics) for two important reasons: 1. There is an abundance of plastic waste in the US that is destined for landfills, rivers, beach and roadsides and recycling as much of our waste is very important of the near term solution. 2. While biopolymers are the future of plastics currently the manufacturing processes of the materials cause their own environmental problems. We look forward to working with these materials in the future as they improve.

Another step in our approach has been the addition of natural ingredient into the formulation of our wax. We have chosen to begin replacing much of our paraffin with 100% organic U.S. soy.
The main assumed problem with paraffin in that it is petroleum based which maintains our reliance on the petroleum producers and all of the associated problem therein.

Soy has proven to be a great substitute and has actually brought unforeseen traction characteristics that have proven beneficial to the MAGMA formula.
