SurfStock - It Ain't Over Til The Fat Lady Sings

SurfStock were granted their license yesterday and we hear rumours of a 'cracker of a theme' and headliners to include a band fronted by a larger lady…

The boys have been celebrating their lawyer's awesomness all night, so if you see a couple of boys drinking rose in Truro today, give them a yell. And yep, those are girls' jeans he's wearing…he had a little accident in his own. Bless.

Maya Gaberia wins Billabong XXL

Brazilian Maya Gabeira has won the Billabong Girls XXL award for monster waveriding, netting a $5,000 prize. If the website was a bit more user friendly I'd give you more info…here's what the press release on Surfer's Village says:

‘Maya Gabeira, 21, took back-to-back titles in the Billabong Girls Best Performance Award after notching up a collection of giant rides in Tahiti, California, Hawaii and Mexico over the past twelve months. Gabeira proved without doubt that she is the world's premiere female big wave surfer.

“It is such and honor to be here again, two years in a row,” said Gabeira. “All my friends are here and my mom flew out from Brazil. To see those waves on the big screen here and listen to everyone scream is such a good feeling.”’

Maya features in this issue of SurfGirl, riding one of the Teahupoo bombs that won her this accolade.

Check out the webcast of the awards ceremony here – hotties Shane Dorian and Greg Long feature!

Rochelle Ballard interview

It sucks when your favourite pros retire from the Tour and disappear off the radar, so it's great to see Surfermag doing an interview with legend Rochelle Ballard. She's still as stoked as ever!

Studentsville

The students are arriving for the BUSA competition this weekend. Fistral was a zoo at 8am! It's about 2ft and pretty weak, but looks quite fun anyway. Good luck to all of you girls surfing this weekend, it's amazing to see so many girls in the water here at this time of year!

Young Guns 3

Pretty much the whole office went to watch Young Guns 3, the new Quiksilver flick, last night. The free food and beer in the Sugar Lounge in Newquay went down nicely and there was a big crowd assembled upstairs to watch the action. Nice to see so many girls there - the last premiere I went to there were about five…Also lots of hot men there, which was good entertainment. Jake Paterson was on board to intro the film, not that many people seemed to be listening to him.

Anyway, I think it needed a bit of editing. I loooove all and any surf films, but I wasn't all that impressed to be honest. The kids blow up, there's no question of that, but there was little coherence to the film and no theme. Also, the camerawork had nothing like the 'wow' factor of the amazing helicopter stuff seen before. I guess I just expected more, even from Slater's section. Loved the music and don't get me wrong the surfing really was shit-hot, but the waves weren't great and it wasn't put together how you'd expect. Throw more money at the film less on the parties, I guess…I'm still in love with Ry Craike tho. ;-)

longboard book

If you're a logger or an aspiring one, take a look at Lee Ryan's new book. Lee is a Brit and world champ so he's got it sussed. There's a free sample chapter on the website and the whole thing is an ebook available to download for about £18.

no more slater?

Slater to retire?! It's been rumoured here and there since he got knocked out of the Search comp in Chile by Deano, but there's nothing concrete yet. We reckon he'll stick around to beat Tommy's event wins record at least. And what would a live web feed be without Kelly?!

Stay tuned, we'll bring the news to the Carve news page as it comes.

Anyway, we reckon the baldy one will still push boundaries, on or off the Tour.

Saltwater Girl Surf

We just had a visit from Bryony who runs Saltwater Girl and Saltwater Girl Surf in South Africa. Goody, two new girly surf mags to read! It's great to hook up with other people in the biz and we're only sorry we didn't have more time to show her around town (not that there's much to see but tumbleweed in Newquay!)

The deadline for SurfGirl is, er, yesterday!? We're so busy we're not sure any more! But it's coming together now…and I hope you like the wetsuit guide cos it's killing me.

Anyway, be sure to check out their new-look Saltwater Girl Surf website for a fix of all things girly surf!
